TONY ALLEN - Mr. Afrobeat

New CD - Lagos No Shakin'

Live at Copenhagen Jazzfestival 14 July 2006
During his years with the legendary Nigerian FELA KUTI 1964 - 1978,  drummer Tony Allen invented the afrobeat, which had a revival in the club music circuit, especially after the release of Home Cookin' on Damon Albarn's label 2003.

In 2006, Tony has returned to what's central, with an album that is both a definitive personal statement and a landmark in the development of afrobeat. Recorded over 10 all-night sessions in the edgily groovy Ikeja district, Lagos No Shaking is the first Lagos-recorded album on which Tony has had complete artistic freedom. But it is also a truly collaborative work, which draws on the city's diverse musical traditions and brings together several generations of Lagosian musical talent.

One of the singers is the legendary 78-year-old Fatai Rolling Dollar from Lagos, who had his break-through in 1953!
